Hello

Please meet Hero, he is my little buddy and I’m so honored and grateful to be his. He just became a tripawd at age 5.

Hi, my name is Chad and my dog’s name is Hero.
We named him that as a puppy after a Japanese man with that name. Hero is 5 and got bone cancer in his right rear foot so we decided to amputate it. His amputation was successfully completed on 1/8/2010. The photo is of course pre-op. Hero is the one on the left. Hope, his sister, is on the right. You can see the lump in his foot if you look closely. That is his swollen bone, which we stupidly thought was just a sprain at first.
Thank you for this website. We really appreciate all of the good information and encouragement and support.

  1. Welcome Chad, and thanks for joining! We are sorry to hear about Hiro – traditional Japanese spelling. 😉 But we’re glad you found us.

  2. Those two are beautiful! I love the name Hero; it seems Sam, my new tripawd, has been my hero more times than I can count in his 8yrs. Sam had his front left leg amputated on Dec. 3rd, it was a little rough at first but now he’s just as big a mess as he was when he was a puppy I think!! He’s has figured out he can get away with more and be a lot more demanding now…one of these days I’m going to have to lay the law down… 🙂
You are right this web-site is great source for information and inspiration; the folks connected in all cyber-angels, in my opinion.
Please keep us up to date on Hero and post more pics when you can (every one likes puppy pics!)

  3. Hi Hero and Chad!
Holly is also recovering from a right rear leg amputation. Her surgery was 12/29. She’s doing pretty well at this point – still not eating great, but is getting around well. There are a few other newbie tripawds here – Tehya, Timber, and Missy are the ones I’ve read about – and there may be more. You’ll find lots of great information and lots of great people and tripawds on this site. It has been amazing for me – the support and information have helped a ton as Holly has adjusted to life on 3 legs. Everything I’ve read says the first 2 weeks are the worst… so I hope we can help each other get through this stage with our new tripawds!

  4. Hi, thank you very much for welcoming us. Hero’s name spawned the name for Hope, so we thought Hero (as opposed to Hiro) would be a more appropriate spelling. Speaking of Japanese and dogs, you probably also know about the statute of a dog named Hachiko in Tokyo. If anyone doesn’t know about the story, it about a dog’s loyalty. In the 1930’s Hachiko’s master died and though he was adopted, Hachiko went to the train station every day to wait for him. Hachiko did this every day for 10 years until he died.

To Holly’s mom, I’m glad to hear about Holly and truly appreciate your support.

  5. Hello Hero and Chad!

Thank you for sharing your story. We (Nikki, our 8yo Rottie) are about to go down this path as well.

I wish you guys the best of luck, and thank you for posting the updates as you go along. It sounds like you’re on the right path, and hopefully we can still be sharing success stories in the months and years to come!
